CBD and The Aging Population

CBD and The Aging Population

People in the United States are living longer than ever.  Modern medicine has allowed people to live longer and have better quality of life into our 80s.  It’s crazy to imagine that 100 years ago the average life expectancy of a man was 47 years old.  With people living longer than ever, we are learning more about age-related degenerative conditions that affect the human body.  The Baby Boomers are getting older and mostly affected by the conditions.

The Baby Boomers have had an interesting relationship with cannabis and hemp.  They were born after it had been made federally illegal in 1937.  However, they were the hippies in the 60’s that brought marijuana back to life and spurred Richard Nixon to create the DEA.  Then, they jumped onto the “Just Say No” campaigns in the 80’s and started the war on drugs.  Now, they’re investing in cannabis and hemp companies and poised to the be largest consumer market in the industry.  Wow, I’m dizzy.

Age-Related Degenerative Conditions

The cause of all age-related conditions is inflammation.  While, this simplicity of this statement may sound insane, it makes sense when you understand how many different types of inflammation there are.  The human immune system is one of the most complex and fascinating features of our bodies.  Our bodies are under attack 24-7.  Our bodies are warzones against viruses, bacteria, fungi, allergens, protozoa, and even cancer.  And our immune system is fighting non-stop to keep us healthy.  One of the side effects of our immune system fighting is inflammation.  Our immune system releases some type of inflammatory compound every time it activates – which is all the time.

Normally, after the immune system kills the bad guy, we have cleaner cells that come by and clean up the inflammation.  However, as we age, our bodies aren’t as efficient as they were when we were young.  This leads to inflammatory compounds hanging around the body all the time.  At high levels, this cause noticeable pain and is usually treated.  But, at low levels, we often don’t realize that this inflammation exists, and it slowly wreaks havoc.  The worst of examples of degenerative conditions caused by inflammation are Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease.  More benign, yet still problematic, examples of long-term inflammation is arthritis.  This is due more to ‘wear and tear’ rather than an antigen introduced into the body.

Why is Hemp and CBD so Important to the Aging Population.

Inflammation.  Study after Study shows that hemp is loaded with anti-inflammatory compounds.  It is like a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) multivitamin.  It also doesn’t seem to feature the bad side effects as other NSAIDs like acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and aspirin.  I must mention, however, that due to the newness of this discovery, no long-term studies have been conducted.  So far, CBD and hemp are proving to be safe, healthy, and non-toxic in ‘natural’ doses.

A study from a few years ago showed that cannabidiol had better anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive properties than aspirin and tramadol.

Because inflammation is such a problem for the aging human body, it should be no surprise that the anti-inflammatory drug market is expected to be $106 Billion by 2020.  It is important that we find and develop safe ways to minimize inflammation in our bodies as we age.  We believe that CBD and hemp should be another weapon we have to fight inflammation.
