What Is the Difference Between CBD Oil and Hemp Oil?

We know that CBD is a natural way to boost our health and wellness. But what about hemp oil? Is it the same thing as CBD? Is it different?

If you’re interested in CBD oil, you’ve likely heard the term “hemp oil” thrown around a lot. This can be confusing because it’s not always clear what the difference is between hemp oil and CBD oil. While CBD and hemp oil shares many similarities, they have some key differences you should be aware of before making a purchase decision.

In this article, we’ll look at the differences between hemp extract vs CBD.

What is Hemp Oil?

Hemp is a variety of cannabis plant that has been used for hundreds of years for food, fiber, and medicine. Today it is used for many other purposes, such as in soaps, skin care products, cosmetics, building materials, and biofuels.

Hemp oil is made by pressing hemp seeds and contains no THC or CBD because other parts of the plant contain these compounds. Also known as hemp nut or hemp nut oil, it has a mild nutty flavor and a rich texture. Its consistency is somewhere between olive oil and sesame oil.

You can buy hemp seed oil as a dietary supplement or an ingredient in skin care or hair care products. In addition, many people use it as an ingredient in foods and drinks like granola bars, salad dressings, or smoothies. It also makes an excellent carrier oil for essential oils or other plant extracts you want to add to your diet or skincare routine.

Hemp Oil Benefits

The oil extract or more known and labeled as hemp seed oil, has a good nutrient profile. It includes essential fatty acids like omega-3s and omega-6s, B vitamins, vitamin E, vitamin D, and other minerals like magnesium, potassium, zinc, and iron. Hemp oil benefits include improving heart and brain health, lowering inflammation, and lowering cholesterol levels. Moreover, the omega fatty acids in hemp seed oil promote healthy cell function throughout your body, including cell membranes and brain cells. It also contains GLA (gamma-linolenic acid), which helps with skincare.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD (cannabidiol) is one of more than 100 cannabinoids in cannabis plants. It is a naturally occurring cannabinoid compound with considerable medical benefits but does not cause intoxication or euphoria. Unlike Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which has psychotropic effects and can get you high, CBD doesn’t cause any “high.”

Cannabidiol extracts can come from both marijuana and hemp plants. The CBD you’ll find in most stores is made from hemp since marijuana is illegal in most places. Manufacturers extract CBD via industrial extraction processes like CO2 extraction or ethanol extraction.

Hemp-derived CBD has no psychoactive effects due to its low levels of THC. The Farm Bill of 2018, which made hemp CBD oil legal in all 50 states, stipulates that it must not contain more than 0.3% THC to become legal to sell.  Despite being legal on a federal level, CBD oil is subject to state regulations. CBD Oil Benefits

Manufacturers then turn CBD extract into various forms, including CBD oils, capsules, tinctures, topicals, and many more. One can also vaporize and ingest it via a vape pen. Today, a lot of studies show how CBD can help your health and well-being. Among its health benefits for humans and pets include the following:

  • Reduces inflammation

  • Relieves pain and soreness

  • Lessen anxiety and depression symptoms

  • Help with sleep problems

  • Relieves cancer treatment effects like nausea

  • Promotes cardiovascular health

Types of CBD Oil

There are three types of CBD oil: full spectrum, broad spectrum, and isolate. Both can be used for a variety of benefits, and each has its unique properties.

Full-Spectrum CBD Oil

Full-spectrum CBD oil contains the full range of cannabinoids found in hemp, including CBD, THC, and other compounds. This variety means that it has all the beneficial properties of the plant. The most common full-spectrum oil is CBD with a carrier oil like coconut or hemp seed oil. Although it contains trace amounts of THC, it is not enough to produce any psychoactive effect.

CBD Isolate

Isolate, or pure CBD oil, is a pure form of CBD that does not contain any other cannabinoid or terpene. This type of CBD oil may be preferable for those who want to avoid THC altogether or for those who seek a more consistent experience due to their lack of variation.

Broad-Spectrum CBD Oil

Broad-spectrum CBD oil is free of THC and consists of two cannabinoids and a terpene. It contains more than CBD alone, but not the full spectrum of compounds, which is between full spectrum and CBD isolate.

So, is CBD Oil and Hemp Oil the Same or Different?

Hemp oil isn’t the same as CBD oil. While both products come from the Cannabis Sativa plant, the difference is that hemp oil comes from pressing the seeds, while CBD oil comes from the flowers and stalks of the cannabis plant. As discussed above, they’re processed differently to make them more viable as consumer products. The two oils have different uses, medicinal benefits, and legal statuses. We can apply both oils topically or ingest them internally for their therapeutic properties.

Most of the confusion between CBD oil and hemp oil differences lies in the labeling of products. Having a good grasp of industry terminology is key when purchasing products. Do your due diligence and examine the product descriptions to learn what compounds each hemp oil or CBD oil product contains.
